Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 20th April 1917: Report on local appeals tribunal. George Crosbie (aged 22 and married) was exempt from military duty as he was a mail bus driver employed by his father William Crosbie, Ann Street, Gatehouse. The military representative said that there was another 17 year old son who could do George’s work. Mr Crosbie said that his younger son could not drive. The appeal was sustained and George’s exemption from military duty was withdrawn.

Enlisted at Galashiels 18th July 1918, aged 18. Royal Army Service Corps (Motor Transport). Reg.No. : m/410637 (private). Mail bus driver (Murray Arms Garage) living in Ann Street, Gatehouse
Born 14/05/1900, Girthon. Father: W.M. Crosbie. 5’ 7’’ tall & unmarried.
Posted 20/07/1918 to 4th RSF (No 61493) & then transferred to R.A.S.C.
Served as a lorry driver in the convoy Staff Company in Aldershot, Winchester, Teddington & Kinross. With the 4th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1918 at Kinross when he was twice injured.
His father wrote to the army on 22/01/1919 to ask for James’ release so that he could continue his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic & bus driver. He was to be paid 35/- a week.

Identified as a Gatehouse soldier from SRoH because of his distinctive name.
