Medical - suffered a back injury on 12/12/1917 while on active service and had 4 hospital stays between then and 1918. When he was discharged in 1920, he suffered from chronic rheumatism which had been aggravated on active service in France. Treated in Queen Mary's Hospital, Whalley.
1911 Hull Census Alpha Ave: John McBurnie, labourer in dockyard, aged 41, born Gatehouse, Scotland with wife Alice (37, born Anlaby, Yorkshire). Married 3 years but no children.
We found no death for Alice McBurnie between 1911 and 1915 when John enlisted and said that he was single.
Birth: John McBurnie born 1868 in Anwoth/Girthon on the Scotlands People Index. There were several Burnie/McBurnie families in Gatehouse around the late 1860's but no birth has been found in the local Church records for a John on 09/07/1868 (from Army records), nor in the 1871 Anwoth or Girthon census.

Mobilised 4th August 1914, Ayrshire Yeomanry. Transferred to Royal Field Artillery. Served on Eastern Front (Gallipoli, Mesopotamia). Died at sea 11th January 1918.
Identified as ‘Gatehouse soldier’ from gravestone in Anwoth Old Kirkyard.

SS Kinfauns Castle was a ship used to transport troops.

William’s wife, Thomsina McGhie was born at Anwoth in 1888. Her father was a coachman and seemed to move to different jobs around the south of Scotland.
