Military Records : Enlisted in Imperial Yeomanry 11th January 1900. Service No. 8470. Born Edinburgh. Gentleman aged 21 yrs 8 mths. Discharged at own request 11th February 1901.
1881 Edinburgh Census, at 3 St Colm Street : John Gordon Jameson (2, born Edinburgh) with mother Christian Robison Jameson, an Advocate’s wife + brother Andrew James Jameson and several servants.
1891 Edinburgh Census : at St Colm Street : John G. Jameson (12, born Edinburgh) with mother Christian R. Jameson (wife of Sheriff Jameson) + brothers Andrew J. and Alexander M. and sister Alexa G.C. (all born in Edinburgh).
1901 Anwoth Census, at Ardwall : John G. Jameson was a student in law, age 22, born Midlothian. No other members of his family were at Ardwall on census night.
Newspaper clipping: 3 brothers, Andrew J.McCulloch, Col. Alexander McCulloch Jameson and Captain John Gordon Jameson were all soldiers. See Alexander Jameson above.
He may have fought in the Boer War.

Enlisted February 1916, 3rd Battalion, Royal Scots. Transferred to 12th Battalion.
Served on Western Front (Arras). Killed in action 12th April 1917.

Address: Upper Brook Street, C-on-M, Manchester (Chorlton-on-Medlock was commonly known as C-on-M ). Aged 25yrs 7m when he enlisted 12th February 1916. Occupation : cashier. Was 5'2½'' with a fresh complexion, hazel eyes and fair hair. He had 3 moles in the centre of his chest and one on the back of his neck. Father (and next of kin): Robert Jardine, Riverside, Gatehouse of Fleet.
11th November 1915 - attested and was sent to Army Reserves.
12th February 1916 - mobilised and posted to the Royal Scots - 29916
24th October 1916 - joined Expeditionary Force
08th January 1917 - appointed L/Cpl with 12th Battalion Royal Scots
13th January 1917 - acting Corporal
12th April 1917- wounded and then died (killed in action).
21st June 1917 - Officer in charge of recruitments sent a letter to the officer in charge of records. There was confusion about a letter sent to Thomas' mother which stated that her son had died on 4th May 1917 when he had actually died on 12th April. A second enquiry was put forward ... and a statement was received that a younger brother was killed in May.
Robert Eustace Jardine was killed on 9th May 1917, his older brother Arthur Thomas was killed on 12th April 1917. It appears that his mother heard about Robert's death before she knew of Arthur's because of confusion with army records.
05th May 1918 - various articles belonging to Arthur were sent to his mother at Riverside. They included a cigarette case, pipe, wrist watch (damaged), strap, letters, cards and photos.

1911 Manchester Census, Ardwick Hall : Arthur T. (20, clerk, single), along with about 150 other employees of Affleck & Brown, who owned a large drapery and departmental store nearby. (note: James Brown, one of the owners of Affleck & Brown owned the Knockbrex estate between Gatehouse and Borgue). William Raphael from Gatehouse was also a clerk, living at Ardwick Hall.
Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser, 18th May 1917 : Corporal Arthur T Jardine, Royal Scots, son of Mr & Mrs Jardine, Riverside, Gatehouse is listed as wounded.
Girthon Banns : Parents Robert Jardine & Agnes Gordon married in 1889.
Arthur and Robert Jardine were brothers. Both were killed at Arras in October 1914.

Peter Drummond Jardine

Military Records : No. 209857 Private. Army Service Corps (Motor Transport) Home: High Street, Gatehouse. Enlisted 9th December 1915 at Dumfries.
He was 33 years & 250 days old, plumber (fitter) & was 5’4½’’ tall. Had served with the Galloway Rifles 1901 – 1907. Paid ½d a day. Learned to drive at Grove Park and seems to have served in London during the war. Wife: Agnes Straiton, married in Gatehouse, Daughter: Annie Helen born 07/08/1915.
Dispersed April 1919 at Paisley.
N.B. although the military record gives the birth of Annie Helen as 07/08/1915, Annie's daughter Anne Dickson says that Annie's birthdate was in fact 15/08/1915.

Military Records : Enlisted 18th November 1915, age 21 years & 150 days. 11th Battalion Royal Scots. (No 27947). 5’8½’’ tall and described as ‘superior, nice lad, active and strong’. Draper. Father: Robert Jardine snr.
In 1917 his brothers named as Alex. Gordon Jardine aged 24 staying at 957 Argyle St. Glasgow & John F. Broadfoot Jardine, aged 18 at Riverside, Gatehouse.
While in the Field he received 2 punishments: Aug 1916 ‘for standing-to without a helmet’ – 3 days confined to barracks, & Nov. 1916 ‘dirty rifle’ & ‘not shaved on parade’ - 7 days confined to barracks. Received British War & Victory Medals.

Note : In the 1911 census, the enumerator has transposed some of the information for Robert and his mother. Robert was born in Gatehouse, not Castle Douglas as stated in the census return.
