Robert Hood

SRoH.        Private Robert Hood.         Home: Low Barlay Cottage, Gatehouse.
Enlisted in King’s Own Scottish Borderers.     Served on Western Front.
Reported missing October 1917 and presumed killed.

Anwoth & Girthon War Memorial, Gatehouse inscription :  Robert Hood        K.O.S.B.

Borgue Gravestone : ‘’..also Robert, their son, Private 2nd KOSB, killed in action on 4th Oct 1917, aged 35. ‘’  Father : John Hood,   Mother : Mary Murchie.

CWGC : Private Robert Hood 25770 K.O.S.B. (2nd Battalion).
Died 04/10/1917 (aged 37).  On Tyne Cot memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium Panels 66 to 68.
Parents: John & Mary Hood, Pringleton, Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire.

1901 Minnigaff Census, at Boreland Cothouse : Robert Hood (20, born Minnigaff) with father John Hood (ploughman), mother Mary + a brother and sister.

1911 Anwoth Census, at Boreland of Anwoth : Robert Hood (drainer, 30, born Minnigaff), with father John (ploughman), mother Mary, brother John and sister Marion.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 2nd November 1917: Private Robert Hood, K.O.S.B., son of Mr & Mrs Hood, Low Barlay Cottage, Gatehouse has been posted as missing.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 7th December 1917: Private R. Hood, K.O.S.B. killed in action 4th October 1917 (aged 36). He was the third son of John & Mary Hood, Low Barlay, Gatehouse of Fleet.

Gatehouse link : Born at Minnigaff, but lived at Boreland of Anwoth and Low Barlay Cottage.

Robert James Hope

SRoH.        Private Robert Hope.         Home: Birtwhistle Street, Gatehouse.
Enlisted February 1916, 1/4 King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
Served in Egypt (Gaza), France (Cambrai).   Wounded once at Cambrai.

Sons of Galloway : Mobilised in June 1916 with 3rd/5th K.O.S.B.  Later Private 5353/241632 with 1/4th K.O.S.B. Served in Egypt and Palestine and from January 1917 on the Western Front .
Wounded in Palestine in 1917 and in Cambrai (France) 01/101918.

1901 Twynholm Census, at High Nunton : Robert Hope (9, born Rerrick) with parents Robert (shepherd) and Agnes + 3 siblings Mary, Agnes & Thomas.

1911 Girthon Census, at Enrick :  Robert J. Hope (19, born Rerrick), with father Robert   (shepherd) and mother Agnes.       He was the only child at home.

Girthon gravestone : 1915 mother Agnes died & the family were at Enrick Farm outside Gatehouse.

Valuation Roll :  1920/21 father had moved to Birtwhistle Street, Gatehouse.

Robert James Hope was born in1891 at Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. (Probably at Holehouse, where his family were living in the 1891 census)
His parents were Robert Hope and Agnes Colvin.
In 1916 he married Lizzie Gilmour in Gatehouse. Later that year Robert & Lizzie had a son Robert James Hope.

Gatehouse link : Born at Rerrick, but lived at Enrick, Girthon.

Thomas Hope

SRoH.     Not mentioned in Stewartry Roll of Honour.
Thomas identified as a soldier ex ‘Sons of Galloway’.

Sons of Galloway : Thomas Hope served as Private S/9811, 1st Gordon Highlanders. Wounded in January 1916. Transfered to Home Service in December 1917 as Private 495604, Labour Corps.Transfered to Class Z Army Reserves on 8th April 1919.

Army Records - Medal Index Card : Thomas Hope Pte. 9811 Gord. Highrs. (Gordon Highlanders); Pte. 495604 Lab(our) Corps. promoted to Lance Corporal. Arrived in France 21/07/1915. Address for medals to be sent - Mr R. Hope, 11 Birtwhistle St., Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.

1901 Twynholm Census, at High Nunton : Thomas Hope (aged 6 born Rerrick) with parents Robert (shepherd) and Agnes + 3 siblings Mary, Agnes & Robert.

1911 Girthon Census, at Enrick :  Robert Hope (shepherd) and Agnes.
          These are Thomas’s parents but Thomas was not at home.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 12th May 1916 : News has been received by Mr Hope, Enrick Cottage, near Gatehouse, that his son, Pte. Tom Hope, of the Gordon Highlanders, has been wounded. Private Hope has lost the sight of his left eye, having been struck on the head. This is the second time he has been wounded.

William Hope

SRoH.        Not mentioned in Stewartry Roll of Honour.
A current family member identified William as a WW1soldier.

Certificate of Service : Lance Corporal  189418  91st Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force.
William enlisted 22/10/1915 at Chatham, Ontario. His address was R2 Thamesville. He was a farmer and single. Next of kin was Robert Hope, his father, of Enrick, Gatehouse.
He was 5’5½” with grey eyes and dark hair. He was a Presbyterian. (Attestation Papers ex Canadian Forces website and also a certificate provided by his grandson).

1891 Rerrick census : William (aged 6) was at Holehouse with his parents Robert (a shepherd) and Agnes with sisters Agnes and Mary.

1901 Borgue census : William was a farm servant at Muncraig, living with the Sneddon family. His parents and family had moved to High Nunton, Twynholm.

Born 18/10/1885 at Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Robert James, Thomas and William Hope were brothers, the sons of Robert Hope and Agnes Colvin.

Girthon gravestone : 1915 his mother Agnes died & the family were at Enrick Farm outside Gatehouse.

Alexander Houston

SRoH.       Not in Stewartry Roll of Honour.       Identified as a soldier from Gatehouse ex Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser “First Instalment of Stewartry Roll of Honour” 25th December 1914.          Artificer Alexander Houston.

An artificer is a skilled craftsman or technician who is often employed to make spare parts or ‘gadgets’.]

1891 Kelton Census, at Ernespie Farm : Alexander Houston (14, born Kells) with father Alexander Houston (a farm manager, 58, born Anwoth) and mother Helen and 3 brothers and an aunt.  Although Alexander jnr. was born at Kells, his father and aunt were born in Gatehouse as were 2 of his brothers.

1901 Kelton census, at 6 King Street (Castle Douglas) Alexander Houston (24, born Kelton, cattle dealer) with father Alexander (60, born Gatehouse, grocer) and mother Helen (maker of aerated water)

          This is the only Alexander Houston found with a Gatehouse connection.

Gatehouse link : Born in Kelton, but father + 2 brothers born Gatehouse.
