Anwoth Church Graveyard

Title	The graveyard is in the parish of Anwoth. The first graveyard in Anwoth was at ‘the clachan’, around the now ruinous Old Anwoth Kirk. The newer Anwoth Parish Church was built about ¼mile towards the A75 and the “new graveyard” is in a walled area adjacent to this. A 2^nd walled area is reserved as a “McCulloch graveyard”.
Location	From Cardoness Castle, head west along the A75 for ½mile, then take the R turn towards Anwoth. The graveyard is about ½mile along this minor road in the direction of Anwoth clachan. Grid Reference NX------. The postcode of nearest house, Bush o’Bield, is DG7 2--.
Previous surveys of Girthon New Graveyard	In 1985 the Manpower Services Commission produced transcripts of all gravestones where the first entry is pre-1918. This was a very valuable contribution, but there were a number of transcription errors and post 1918 deaths were not all recorded. In 1993 the Scottish Genealogy Society commissioned a non-verbatim transcription. In 2008 we carried out our own photographic survey to ensure that further stone deterioration will not result in lost information. These photographs can be found at http://www.kirkyards.co.uk (they are referenced using our old grave-numbering system). In 2016 we accessed the Dumfries and Galloway Lair Records via downloads from Ancestry.co.uk and we photographed the graveyard plans from the D&G office in Abercrombie Road, Castle Douglas. We then combined the lair records with the gravestone transcriptions and re-photographed all gravestones. These are used below.
Gravestone Numbering and Map	Each gravestone survey used different maps and grave-numbering system. The Lair Records have a number of entries where there is no gravestone, so for this, our "Final" survey we have adopted the same numbering convention as the Lair Records map. The photographs on the ‘kirkyards’ website are referenced using our old numbering system which is based solely on the existence of gravestones. The “Lair Map name” is the name which identifies the relevant lair on the Lair map. “Burial Details”, if present, are taken directly from the Lair Records. The “Headstone Transcriptions” come from our own photographs or from earlier transcriptions where the headstones are either illegible or have parts that are difficult to read. Lairs are normally used to inter one coffin at a depth of 6ft, another at 4ft 6ins, with further space above to take a number of ashes-only caskets. In the early days “plots” of 3 lairs were typically purchased – capable of taking 6 coffins and a number of caskets. More recently lairs have been sold individually.
