Ministers of the Parishes of Girthon & Anwoth

The Gatehouse district has, over the years, been home to various ecumenical groups, each with their own minister or priest. We will ultimately try to list all the ones that we can find out about, but for the time being here are some photos taken of the Millenium Monument which is located at a site in the Boreland Hills to the west of Gatehouse.

Rev Jeoffreys J A Carmichael.jpgThe Revd Jeoffreys James Arthur Carmichael was born in Glasgow on 8 April 1918.

He attended Bellahouston School before studying Economics at Edinburgh University and gaining an MA degree. He studied theology at New College, Edinburgh with a two year break in the early 1940’s when he acted as chaplain at lumberjack and dam building worker camps in the Highlands.

Mr Carmichael served as Army chaplain in Germany after he was licensed and he was ordained in 1945. He later became the Minister of Forth in Lanarkshire. He moved to the parish of Lochmaben in 1956 and worked there for 15 years before moving to Girthon Church, Gatehouse of Fleet in 1971. Anwoth was added to his charge when the two parishes united on the death of the Revd John Tumbull in 1975. Mr Carmichael retired in 1983.

Mr Carmichael was Moderator of the Presbytery in ??.

He was invited to preach at Crathie Church in 1981 where he was the guest of the Royal family at Balmoral.
