This document contains a transcript of gravestone inscriptions from Anwoth Old Churchyard.

There have been 3 previous attempts at this task.

1.      In 1964 the then session clerk, Walter McCulloch, organized for the stones to be cleaned and he then transcribed their contents. There may have been only 4 bound copies of this document produced. One copy was left at Anwoth Church for any visitor to peruse. One copy was deposited at the Ewart Library in Dumfries and one copy is kept by the Scottish Genealogy Society. The final copy was kept by the author.

2.      In 1985 the Manpower Services Commission (MSC) carried out a transcript of all pre-1918 headstones at Girthon and Anwoth graveyards.

3.      In 1992 The Scottish Genealogy Society undertook its own survey, carried out by Alison Mitchell. However this survey is not a true transcript as it contains abbreviations and is more of a compendium of names and dates from each stone.

In 2009 the authors of this document took photographs of each headstone in the graveyard and these photos were numbered according to the MSC document. No attempt was made to clean the stones prior to photographing.

A hardcopy of the MSC document was scanned and imported into a Word document. This process led to a number of transcription errors but these were eliminated as much as possible by visual inspection.

This current document started with a copy of the transcribed version of the MSC work. Photos of the headstones were examined and necessary changes were made. The McCulloch wording was also checked for differences ; most changes were made to stones that were no longer legible. Where there was still uncertainty the Genealogy Society transcript was used.
