William Dickie

Identified from Military Records on Ancestry.co.uk after searching for ‘Gatehouse’.

Military Records :    William Dickie.              Home: Catherine St, Gatehouse on Fleet.      Enlisted 11/03/1915,  aged 44yrs 271 days,  so born c.1870.     No. 5470 Army Service Corps (No 1 Coy.).
Saddler. 5’4½’’ tall. Unmarried. Next of kin : uncle, William Martin, Church Cres. Dumfries.
Awarded British War Victory Medal.
Served 2 years & 47 days – between 04/04/1915 & 10/12/1916 with BEF, rest of time at home. Discharged 26/04/1917 as ‘no longer physically fit for service’.     Awarded a pension of 13/9.

Gatehouse Censuses : No-one with surname Dickie in Girthon or Anwoth between 1871 and 1911. His address when discharged in 1917 was still Catherine Street, Gatehouse, so presume that William must have moved to Gatehouse between 1911 and 1915.

1891 Glasgow Census : 23 yr old saddler William Dickie from Wigtown was a boarder in Camlachie area of Glasgow.

Gatehouse link : Military records say he lived in Gatehouse.

Fred Dickinson

SRoH.       Not in Stewartry Roll of Honour.       Identified as a soldier from Anwoth or Girthon ex Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser “First Instalment of Stewartry Roll of Honour” 25th December 1914.
Private F Dickenson     5th King’s Own Scottish Borderers.

Girthon Gravestone : William T. Dickinson died 31st August 1924 aged 76...Also Elizabeth Gordon (his wife) died 3rd August 1926 aged 76 [Fred's parents].

 

1891 Girthon Census, Catherine Street: Fred Dickinson (1, born Girthon) with father William T Dickinson (43, born England, basket maker), wife Elizabeth (42), 3 older sisters, 2 older brothers including Gordon (9) and 2 step-brothers William and Robert Shirra.

1901 Girthon Census, in Catherine Stret: Fred Dickinson (11, born Gatehouse) with father Thomas (53, basket maker, born in England), mother Elizabeth, brother Edwin and sister Priscilla.

1911 Girthon Census, Catherine Street: Frederick Dickinson (21, born Girthon, basket maker) with father William T Dickinson (63, basket make born in England) and wife Elizabeth (60) and sister Priscilla.

Stuart Wilson, Sons of Galloway : Although Fred enlisted in August 1914 and is pictured with the 5th KOSB at Castle Douglas on 7th August 1914, he does not appear to have gone overseas. He may well have done Home Service.

Fred's parents were William Thomas Dickinson and Elizabeth Gordon. He is a brother of Gordon Dickinson.

Military Records : Gordon Dickinson.      Home: Catherine Street, Gatehouse.     Enlisted 03/08/1914.     1640  K.O.S.B.(5th Battalion).    33 years old, born Girthon.     Unmarried,  Farm servant.      5’ 8’’ tall and Presbyterian.

1891 Girthon Census, Catherine Street :  Gordon Dickinson (age 8, born Girthon) with father Thomas (basket maker), mother Elizabeth + 7 siblings.

1901 Girthon Census, Catherine Street :  Gordon not at home with the family.

1901 Ayr Census at 35 Viewfield Road : Gordon Dickinson (19, born Gatehouse of Fleet) was a dyehouse worker boarding with the Crozier family.

1911 Girthon Census : Gordon Dickinson is entered as a homeless general labourer. He was born c.1882 Girthon. His parents William T. and Elizabeth Dickinson and his brother Samuel still lived in Catherine Street. Samuel and William T. were basket makers.

Gordon's parents were William Thomas Dickinson and Elizabeth Gordon. He is a brother of Fred Dickinson.

Served on Western Front (France & Flanders).
Killed before Ypres, August 1917.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 7th September 1917: Private John Dickson, son of William Dickson, Kirkdale Bank, Creetown has been posted as 'officially missing' since August 1st (1917).

Born in 1897 in Kirkmabreck parish, son of William Dickson and Grace Blane.

1911 Kirkmabreck Census : William Dickson (38), with Grace (41), John (13), William (11), Mary Tate Dickson (6), Peter (3) and Blain (male, 1)

Kirkmabreck Valuation Rolls 1915 & 1920: William Dickson was inhabitant / occupier of a house at Kirkdale.
          (Ravenshall is on part of the Kirkdale Estate)

William’s brother John Dickson died during the War and is commemorated on the Kirkmabreck War Memorial in Creetown.
