In 1914-18 ladies sometimes stopped young men in the street, who were not in uniform, and gave them a white feather - a symbol of cowardice for failing to join up. The idea behind this badge may have been to discourage these ladies from publicly embarrassing wounded or disabled men. These badges were to be worn in the civilian buttonhole, not on a uniform. The medals were individually numbered on the back and are also known as a Discharge Badge, Wound Badge or War Badge.
