Enlisted April 1917 10th Battalion Scottish Rifles. Served on Western Front (Arras). Wounded at Munehy.
Military Records : No. 34142 Enlisted aged 19, unmarried. Was a farm servant (possibly at Townhead Farm) He was 5’ 3¼’’, & a Presbyterian. Next of kin; Mr Robert Patterson, Catherine Street. Served on Western Front (Arras) between 8th September & 23rd Jan 1918.
Wounded at Munehy. A gun shot wound to his right femur – 6th Dec 1917. Treated in hospital in France (19 CCS - Casualty Clearing Station - and GH -General Hospital - Etaples) then moved to Bethnal Green Hospital, London Jan 1918.
Discharged 31st July 1918. Awarded a pension 27/6 per week
Received Victory Medal in 1922; also awarded British War medal and war badge.

1911 Girthon Census, Neilson Square : Henry Patterson, (13, born Gatehouse) was a boarder (still at school).
Henry’s father was Robert Patterson (joiner) and mother Violet Gordon. His mother died in 1901. His brothers Robert and John Patterson also fought in the war. John was killed in 1918.
Seven of his Patterson cousins (children of his Uncle John) also fought in the war.

John’s brothers Robert and Henry Patterson also fought in the war. Seven of his Patterson cousins (children of his Uncle John) also fought in the war.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 6th October 1916 : In a report about his brother Robert Patterson's injury, it continues saying Private John W. Patterson of the King's Liverpool Regiment, has been missing since 15th September. He is a son of Mr John Patterson, Birtwhistle Street, Gatehouse.
Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 18/10/1918 Private Tom Patterson, Royal Scottish (sic) Fusiliers, son of Mr John Patterson, Birtwhistle Stret, Gatehouse, has been wounded, and his leg amputated below the knee. Mr Patterson has had seven sons on active service. Two of these have been killed (George, Sept. 1915 & Henry, April 1918), one is missing (John William Aug.1916) and two are severely wounded (Tom & another son)
John Patterson, the father, had 5 sons with his first wife Elizabeth Hume, who he married in 1884. They were John William, George, Robert, Thomas B. H. and James. Elizabeth died in 1892 and John married Mary Carson in 1896. John and Mary also had 5 sons David, Henry, Donald H., Douglas and Edward.
John’s brothers George, Thomas and Henry Patterson all died as a result of fighting in the war. His brother David was the only brother known to survive.
Five of his cousins also fought, two, George Fisher and John Patterson were killed.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 29/10/1915 : Private Peter Patterson, 2nd Highland Light Infantry, son of Alexander Patterson of Quarterland, Gatehouse has been missing since 25/09/1915.
Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 05/11/1915: Pte Peter Patterson is a prisoner in Germany. From a postcard sent to his parents at Quarterland.
Note: Patterson and Paterson are often interchangeable depending on the census enumerator. Soldiers Peter and Samuel Patterson are almost certainly brothers.

Military Records : Robert Patterson (9661) enlisted in K.O.S.B. on 10/10/1906 at Berwick. He was a labourer, born Girthon, Gatehouse, aged 18. His parents were John & Mary Patterson of 12 Birtwhistle St., Gatehouse. Previously he had served with the Galloway Rifle Volunteers. He was about 5’3’’ fresh complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He was a Presbyterian. Discharged 08/02/1907.
1891 Anwoth Census, at Planetree Cottage : Robert Patterson (2, born Gatehouse) with grandparents George and Agnes Hume. George was 59, a builder and Inspector of the Poor.
1901 Anwoth & Girthon Censuses : Robert Patterson (12, born Gatehouse) with father John Patterson (42, tailor) and ‘step-‘mother Mary (31) + 6 brothers.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 6th October 1916 : Word has been received this week that Driver Robert Patterson, of the motor transport, has been wounded, and is in hospital in France. He is the son of Mr J. Patterson, Birtwhistle Street, and is a brother of Private J.W. Patterson, who was reported missing.
