SRoH. No reference in Stewartry Roll of Honour. But he was listed in the RoH First Instalment published by Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser on 25th December 1914. A.B. Harry Burgess HMS Erin.

James Burgess
SRoH. Private James Burgess. Employed in Gatehouse before war.
Enlisted November 1915, King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
Served on Western Front.
1911 Girthon & Anwoth Censuses : No James Burgess. A Burgess family was living in Gatehouse High Street - Harry Burgess (driver), wife Caroline + children Harry (17) and Florence (15), both born in England. These are the only children of the family so James cannot be their brother.
We cannot find James Burgess in the Girthon & Anwoth censuses for 1901 and 1911, plus we have no age or place of birth for him.

James Martin Buxton
SRoH : Not in Stewartry Roll of Honour. We know of him from a letter from his brother Tom.
1901 Anwoth Census at Woodhead, Dromore Road : James M. Buxton (age 7, born Mochrum Wigtownshire) with father Herbert Buxton (age 31, retired farmer, born England) & mother Hester F. (age 31, born England). Also brother Thomas (age 9, born Old Luce,) and sister Jeannie B (age 10m, born Girthon).
1905 Anwoth Valuation Roll, at Boatgreen : Herbert Buxton was a tenant in a house.
1911 census : we could not find the Buxton family in Scotland or England.
Dumfries & Galloway Standard 11th July 1914:ex Provost Buxton, on leaving Gatehouse to take up an appointment near Lockerbie ...was the recipient of some handsome gifts.

His address - Transport 1/5 KOSB, 155 Infantry Brigade, 52 Lowland Division, Aboukir, Egypt : ''Jim is here with us. He was in Port Said.''

His address - Transport 1/5 KOSB, 155 Infantry Brigade, 52 Lowland Division, Aboukir, Egypt : ''We landed about 14th June in Egypt ... Aboukir is a small village about 20 miles from Alexandria. It is very quiet here with nothing to see but miles of sand.''
He mentions several Gatehouse men. ''Clem McMichael came out on the same boat but left at Lemnos Bay to go up the Dardanelles. Jim is here with us. He was in Port Said. All the Gatehouse boys had received parcels from Gatehouse people. I heard Gavin McCrone was in hospital not very far off us, so was Robert Hay. I was very sad about Lieut. Maxwell's death. He was very highly thought of in the battalion, and I have heard one or two of our wounded fellows praising him for his coolness and bravery on the battlefield.
There is another Gatehouse fellow here with us, Gordon McClellan. Where is Charlie Manson now? He has come through a lot since the start of the war.''
He also described the journey out to Egypt, the heat and the farming. He complained that many of the parcels which arrived for men were empty.

Served in France 20th August 1914 to 1st January 1919) & Germany (2nd January to 6th June 1919). Awarded Royal Red Cross, 2nd class, and 1914 Star.
Gravestone at Borgue: Helen was born c.1883, (she was 69 when she died in 1952), father John Caig, mother Margaret Marshall. Home: Bruachmore, Gatehouse.
Brother James’ Army Records : Helen served with British Expeditionary Force in Cologne. Father John Caig, gamedealer. Lived at Brewery Cottage, High Street, Gatehouse.
1891 Rerrick census : at Stockmoss Cottage, Nellie Caig (born c.1882, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire) was living with her father John (gamekeeper) and mother Maggie + her sister Agnes (born c.1884) and brother James (born c.1887 Rerrick).
1911 Anwoth census, Fleet Street : John Caig (rabbit dealer) and wife Janet (born Perthshire) + son James (age 23, b.Rerrick, rabbit catcher). Helen was not at home.
Borgue Gravestone : James & Helen's mother Margaret Marshall died in 1905 at Earlston, Borgue.
Anwoth Parish Banns: John Caig, butcher, Fleet Street, married Janet McLaren from Twynholm on 19/01/1908. Janet (Jessie) was Helen's step-mother.

The Caig family continued to live at Bruachmore until Helen died in 1952. Bruachmore and Brewery Cottage are adjoining properties in the Old Brewery complex on the High Street, Gatehouse.
