Born c. June 1882 at Mochrum, Wigtownshire
He was unmarried with no children. He was 5’ 5½’’ tall, occupation ploughman.
Next of kin, Miss Cathrin Walker McGinn (niece) of 9 High Vennel, Wigtown.
No parents names given but they enquired of his whereabouts in August 1917 as they had not heard from him in 14 months.
Sent to France (Boulogne) with BEF in October 1915. Demobbed in March 1919.
Punished for having an untidy hut in October 1916, drunkenness in June 1917 and was confined to barracks for 7days in Jan 1919 for another offence.

1891 Girthon census, Catherine Street : Donald Mckay (5, born Girthon) with father John McKay (general labourer), mother Mary, brothers Thomas 16 and John 18 + 2 sisters.

1891 Girthon census, Catherine Street : John McKay (18, born Girthon, a groom) with father John McKay (general labourer), mother Mary, 2 brothers (Thomas 16 and Donald 5) and 2 sisters.
The McKay family shared the same building with David Johnstone (molecatcher) & wife Ann plus their five children. Maybe if the 2 families had been neighbours for some time, this explains Johnstone John McKay’s name.
