Scottish Presbyterian Church, Newcastle upon Tyne (plaque found in a skip and rescued) : Alexander Landsborough, 9th Royal Scots Battalion (Lothians). Enlisted Newcastle. Killed 23rd April 1917. Born Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John & Williamina Landsborough. Father a postman. Lived in Castle Douglas.

Scottish War Memorial website : Private 351701 Alexander Lansborough enlisted in April 1916 with 1/9th Highland Battalion Royal Scots. He was born in Castle Douglas in 1895. Father: John Landsborough, Mother Williamina Black. He was killed in action 23/04/1917 near Arras. He is buried at Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.

1901 Kelton Census at Academy Place (Castle Douglas) : Alexander Landsborough (5, born Kelton) with father John (41, Town Postman), mother Williamina and sister Maggie B. Landsborough.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 25th May 1917: Private Alexander Landsborough, Royal Scots reported missing on 23/04/1917. He was the only son of Mr & Mrs John Landsborough, Academy Place, Castle Douglas. He was an apprentice banker with Castle Douglas Union Bank and worked for sometime as an accountant in Gatehouse. Later he moved to the National Provincial Bank of England in Newcastle.
He enlisted with the 9th Royal Scots (known as the Dandy 9th) in 1916 and had been in France for 6 months. He was well known in the Castle Douglas area and was a keen cricketer.

Killed in action 23/04/1917 near Arras. Buried at Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.

John William Laurie

SRoH.     Captain John William Laurie.      Home: Africa.      Born in Gatehouse.
Enlisted August 1914, 3rd South African Scottish Horse.
Transferred to Railway Regiment, then ‘The Buffs’ East Kent Regiment.
Served in German South and East Africa and the Western Front.
Promoted to Captain January 1918.
Killed at Morlancourt 9th August 1918.     Pre-war record: Through the Boer War.

Also served in South African and German South West African campaigns.
Parent: A. Laurie of Gatehouse of Fleet.
Wife: Jenny Laurie, 29 Lucan Road, Aigburth, Liverpool.

Previously served in South Africa and joined one of the local volunteer regiments ‘The Scottish Horse’. Enlisted in August 1914 and served in German West Africa and German East Africa before taking up commission with The Buffs. Promoted to Captain in 1918.     Killed at Morlancourt near Albert on 09/08/1918 (Battle of Amiens).

German West Africa is now part of Namibia.    German East Africa is now Rwanda and Tanzania.

1891 Girthon Census, Swan Street : John W. P. Laurie (12, born, Gatehouse) with widowed grandmother Margaret Laurie.

1901 Girthon & Anwoth Censuses : No sign of John Laurie.

Scotlands People Births : Born 3 August 1878 in Swan St. as John William LOWRIE (illegitimate) Mother: Agnes. Registered by grandmother Margaret.

Married Janet McNish of Aigburth Liverpool in 1917 in the Wirral, Cheshire.

Thomas Tait Laurie

SRoH.     Corporal Thomas Tait Laurie.
Home: 1132 Cathcart Road, Mount Florida, Glasgow.     Born in Gatehouse.
Enlisted May 1915, 1st Regiment Scottish Horse, Yeomanry.
Served on Eastern and Western Fronts  (Gallipoli, Palestine, Balkans and France).
Awarded 1914-15 Star.

Medal Index Card : Thomas T. Laurie    Pte Scot. Horse (4493), L/Cpl R. Highrs. (315734) Later Cpl.     Arrived in Balkans 23rd October 1915.       Demobbed 18th April 1919.

1901 Glasgow Census, at Govanhill : Thomas T. Laurie (9, born Girthon), with father Robert (tram driver), mother Robina + sister Mary. All the family were born in Gatehouse.

Girthon Parish Records: Parents Marriage record gives names Robert Laurie and Robina Tait.

Albert Lawrie

Identified as soldier ex Kbt Adv. 18/06/1915.      Survived the War.

1891 Girthon Census, in Nelson Square (should say Neilson Square) : Albert Lourie (3, born Paisley, Renfrewshire) with father David (labourer) and mother Mary Jane + brothers William, Robert A., David and 3 sisters.

1901 Glasgow Census, at 71 Centre Street, Govan : Albert Lawrie (13, born Paisley, Renfrewshire) with father David (dock labourer) and mother Mary Jane (both parents born in Gatehouse) + 3 brothers – (David, Robert A, & Frederick), 3 sisters and a brother in law.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 18/06/1915 : Corporal Albert Lowrie 2nd Highland Light Infantry. He has received a bullet wound in the shoulder and is being treated in a Birmingham Hospital.
