Girthon Gravestones : Gordon Henderson's first wife Mary died aged 63 in 1881. Gordon died in 1899 aged 84. Gordon's second wife, and Alexander's mother, Grace Whan died in 1939 aged 85.

1891 Girthon Census (before Alexander was born), in Catherine Street: Gordon Henderson (74) general labourer was with his wife Grace (50), children Annie, Andrew & William and step daughter Mary Whan.

1901 Girthon Census, in Catherine Street : Alexander Henderson (age 8, born Gatehouse), with widowed mother Grace (44) + 3 brothers Andrew, William & James. The Whan family also lived in the same house. His mother Grace was on parish relief.

1911 Girthon Census, Alexander was not in Gatehouse, although his mother Grace (58) was still living in Catherine Street.

Girthon Banns.: Gordon Henderson was married, for a second time, to Grace Whan in 1885. These are Alexander's parents.

Girthon Poor Law Book : 1896 Gordon Henderson, aged 81, married to Grace Whan claimed parish relief. He had 4 children - Andrew 9, William 7, Alexander 5 and James 1 year & 2 months.

 

Girthon Poor Law Book: 1900 Grace Henderson, widow, claimed parish relief. She had 4 children Andrew, 11, William 10, Alexander 8 and James 4.

James and Alexander Henderson were brothers.

George Henderson

SRoH.       Not in Stewartry Roll of Honour.       Identified as a soldier from Anwoth and Girthon ex Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser “First Instalment of Stewartry Roll of Honour” 25th December 1914.          Private G. Henderson 5th KOSB.

Medal Index Roll : Pte G. Henderson 240134 (crossed out and replaced with 1136) 1st/5th K.O.S.B. Disembarked 6/6/15. Demobbed 15/3/19. There is no proof that this is George Henderson from Gatehouse.

Anwoth & Girthon census 1891 to 1911 : No George Henderson or any other male beginning 'G'

 

Scotlands People Index : We can find no birth of a 'G' or George Henderson in Girthon. In Anwoth the only birth of a Henderson with first name beginning 'G' was Gordon Henderson 1864.

Note : The picture of this soldier comes from a group of ‘pals’ of Gavin McCrone. Soldiers in this picture were named, maybe by Gavin himself. This is where George’s Christian name came from. [We only had an initial from the 1st Instalment of the SRoH].

Identified from Military Records on Ancestry.co.uk after searching for ‘Girthon’.

Girthon Cemetery - 2 ajoining graves give the death of Gordon Henderson (1814-1899) and his wife Grace Whan (1853-1939). These are James' parents.

Army Pension Records : 5'7'' tall, in good physical condition.  Mother : Grace Henderson, Catherine Street, Gatehouse.
Enlisted 13th December 1912 : 1138 King’s Own Scottish Borderers (5th Battalion).   Aged 17 years. Born Girthon.     Miner employed by Col. Bailey (of Cally) and he lived in Catherine Street.
Note: There were copper mines on the Cally Estate.
13/12/1912 - 23/05/1915   - served at Home.
24/05/1915 - 09/10/1915   - Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.
10/10/1915 - 14/01/1916   - served at Home.
Medical Report, November 1915 :  James Henderson 1138 5th KOSB. Age 20 last birthday. Occupation - bobbin maker.
Discharged 14/01/1916. Disability - deafness.
Deafness said to be caused by exposure to .... fire on July 12th 1915 in the Dardanelles. Medical report says his hearing must have been dull before, but James said that his hearing was previously good. Discharged as person unfit as he is now very deaf.  Sent home via Malta in October 1915.

1911 Girthon Census, Catherine Street : James Henderson (16, mill worker, born Girthon) with widowed mother Grace (58, born Anwoth) + brother William.

James Henderson and Alexander C. Henderson were brothers who were both soldiers in WW1..

Herbert William Henry

SRoH.     Private Herbert William Henry.    Home: Bradner, British Columbia, Canada.     Born at Girthon.     Enlisted December 1915, 131st Battalion (Westminster), afterwards 47th Battalion, Canadians.
Served on Western Front (Lens, Vimy, Arras, Cambrai, Passchendaele, Loos, Douai, Bourlon Wood, Denain).

Canadian Great War Project : Herbert William Henry had prior experience with 104th regiment. Later joined 131st Battalion. No. 790245.  Next of kin was Mrs Mary Henry, 102 10th Street, New Westminster, British Columbia.   He survived the war.

1911 Girthon Census, at Hillhead : Herbert Henry (31, gamekeeper, born Girthon) with wife Mary S.,  + daughter Jane H. (aged 1) + his parents James and Helen Henry.

 

Birth Certificate : 1878, 1st December birth of Herbert William Henry at Upper Drumwall, Girthon. Father - James Henry, rabbit catcher. Mother - Helen Crowley. Parents married in November 1864 at Rerrick)

Girthon Banns : Herbert William Henry married Mary Saunders 29/11/1908. They were both from Girthon. Confirmed in ScotlandsPeople index.

Nathan Major Henry

SRoH.        Private Nathan M. Henry.         Home: Dalry
Enlisted August 1917,  K.O.S.B.    Served on Western Front.
Killed in action 17th April 1918.

Being in the Police Force, Nathan's parents lived in many places in the area.  Nathan's mother was from Dalbeattie which might explain why he is on the memorials there,.although Nathan must have attended Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School at some point.

1911 Dalry Census, Kirkcudbrightshire (Scotlands People Index) : Nathan M. Henry age 13.

Kirkcudbright Advertiser 24th May 1918: Private Nathan M. Henry KOSB, son of Police-Sergeant H. Henry, St John's Cottage, Dalry is officially posted missing since 11th April. Joining the army in August last, he went to France at the end of December. In civilian life he was a gardener in the employment of the Hon. Gilbert Campbell Hastings of Glenlee. He is 20 years of age.
