1901 Edinburgh census : Alexander Gillone (born c.1897 Edinburgh) was living at 13 Briar Bank Terrace, St Georges, Edinburgh with father James McKie Gillone (a draper born c.1857 in Kirkcudbrightshire), mother Jane and sister Marion Kennedy Gillone.

ScotlandsPeople: James McKie Gillone married Jane Kennedy in 1895 Edinburgh.

ScotlandsPeople: Alexander Gillone was born in 1897 in Edinburgh (St Georges).

Although there is a 20 year age difference, this Alexander Gillone and the one above were cousins. This Alexander’s father James was a brother of the older Alexander’s mother Agnes. In the 1861 Girthon census James and Agnes were both living with their widowed mother Mary (born c.1830 Tongland) at Barlay Mill, Gatehouse.  Further research from gravestones at Twynholm shows that Mary’s maiden name was Shannon and that her husband Alexander Gillone was miller at Barlay Mill who died in 1860.
Alexander Gillone, the miller, and Mary Shannon were grandparents of both the soldiers named Alexander Gillone.
Alexander had a sister named Marion Kennedy Gillone (born 1896 , Edinburgh), known as May, who became a well known and much loved teacher and choir-mistress in Gatehouse.

Gatehouse of Fleet link : Although Alexander was born in Edinburgh, his father James McKie Gillone was born in Twynholm, and had lived in Gatehouse when young. (Alexander was at Barlay with his grandparents in the 1861 Girthon census). Alexander later attended Boroughmuir High School in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh. The family returned to Gatehouse where Alexander worked for the Bank of Scotland and in 1916 he passed an associates degree under the auspices of the Institute of Bankers

Note: Letrualt Row is in Rhu, Dumbartonshire. Rhonehouse is in Kelton Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire.

The above records all relate to the same man but it is unclear whether he is the man mentioned in the newspaper in 1914.

There was also an Andrew D Girvan, Cpl 53580 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers. (Medal Index Card & Medal Roll).

The only A D Girvan in the Scotlands People Birth Index is Andrew Douglas Girvan born 1893 in Girvan, Ayrshire. He seems to have no connection with Kirkcudbrightshire.

Gatehouse Link : Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser SRoH on Christmas Day 1914 says he was from Anwoth & Girthon. Census seems to indicate he was born in Kelton, so maybe he came to work around Gatehouse before War started.
