John’s father, William Dalrymple lived at Rusko (1861 & 1871 Anwoth censuses) before his first wife Jessie McGaw died in 1866. He later moved to Gelston Castle Lodge, Castle Douglas and married John’s mother Johnanna Thomson in 1886.

CWGC: Private Robert Dalrymple 293155 of Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 7th Battalion, died 17/04/1917 (aged 27) and is on the Arras Memorial (Bay 6), Pas de Calais, France. Mother was Mrs R Dalrymple, 60 Queens St., Newton Stewart.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 9th June 1916: News has come at the end of last week to Wm. Dalrymple, Catherine Street, Gatehouse, that his son Corporal Robert Dalrymple, of the Royal Highlanders of Canada, has been wounded with shrapnel. Corporal Dalrymple is in one of the Base Hospitals.
Robert died in the 1st half of 1917 aged 27, so he was probably born in 1889.
N.B. The 1891 & 1901 censuses give his mother as Mary whereas the CWGC gives Mrs R.

Enlisted January 1915, Canadian Royal Highlanders , 42nd Battalion.
Served Western Front (Ypres). Wounded twice at Ypres. Served as a Musketry Instructor at Bramshot for nearly two years after being wounded.

Dumfries & Galloway Standard Jan 1917: Mr. James Davidson, Fleet Street received word that his 3rd son, James, was wounded on 4th January and died the same day. He had enlisted with K.O.S.B but transferred to Gordons 10 months ago. He was 24 years old. Before the war, James served his apprenticeship with T. McGaw, builder, in Gatehouse.
Chaplain wrote ‘your son was a good and brave soldier’. Mr. Davidson has 4 other sons serving with the colours.
Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 12th August 1921: Unveiling of Gatehouse War Memorial. Wreath laid: ‘In grateful memory of the brave lads, from James Davidson and Family’
Note : His brothers were Robert, Nelson, Peter and Wilfred Davidson. Only Wilfred survived the war.

Dumfries & Galloway Advertiser April 1915: Sent a letter home saying he had been injured at Hill 60 but was recovering. He was in No. 2 Canadian General Hospital, La Treport, France.
Note : his brother was Robert Davidson who was killed in 1918.
