George Crosbie

SRoH.          No details in Stewartry Roll of Honour.     1917 newspaper report suggests that George Crosbie would have been called up for military duty. 

Girthon Gravestone : Death of George Crosbie in 1968 (aged 75) and his wife Jessie Aitken in 1971 (aged 81). The gravestone also mentions daughters Joyce (born c.1916) and Gretta (born 1917).

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 20th April 1917: Report on local appeals tribunal. George Crosbie (aged 22 and married) was exempt from military duty as he was a mail bus driver employed by his father William Crosbie, Ann Street, Gatehouse. The military representative said that there was another 17 year old son who could do George’s work. Mr Crosbie said that his younger son could not drive. The appeal was sustained and George’s exemption from military duty was withdrawn.

George was a brother of soldiers Christopher, James and William Crosbie.

ex grandson Mike Rogers : George & Jessie had a daughter Jessie Margaretta  Crosbie (known as Greta) who was born 27/08/1917. On her birth certificate George's occupation was given as 'Private - Tank Corps'.

Enlisted at Galashiels 18th July 1918, aged 18.    Royal Army Service Corps (Motor Transport).      Reg.No. : m/410637 (private).     Mail bus driver (Murray Arms Garage) living in Ann Street, Gatehouse
Born 14/05/1900, Girthon.     Father: W.M. Crosbie.       5’ 7’’ tall & unmarried.
Posted 20/07/1918 to 4th RSF (No 61493) & then transferred to R.A.S.C.
Served as a lorry driver in the convoy Staff Company in Aldershot, Winchester, Teddington & Kinross. With the 4th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1918 at Kinross when he was twice injured.
His father wrote to the army on 22/01/1919 to ask for James’ release so that he could continue his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic & bus driver. He was to be paid 35/- a week.

Albert Melville Dalrymple

SRoH : Private Albert Melville Dalrymple.    Home: Church Place, Castle Douglas.    Enlisted February 1916, 5th Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers.     Transferred to Royal Scots and Royal Engineers.     Served on Western Front. Wounded three times.

Identified as a Gatehouse soldier from SRoH  because of his distinctive name.

Girthon Gravestone : Amelia J. Poulton, wife of William Dalrymple, who died at Gatehouse 7th April 1893 aged 37 years.... Also Jessie Lockerbie, his second wife who died on the 21st May 1951 aged 82 years. (Albert's mother & step-mother)

1901 Girthon Census, Catherine Street : Albert M. Dalrymple (14, born Gatehouse) with father William (43, stone mason) and his wife Jessie (32) (Albert's stepmother), with 2 older brothers and a younger brother and sister.

Lance-Sergeant Robert Luff Dalrymple was a brother of Albert Melville Dalrymple (ex censuses).
