William McKay

SRoH.       Not in Stewartry Roll of Honour.       Identified from Anwoth & Girthon War Memorial and as a soldier from Anwoth or Girthon ex Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser “First Instalment of Stewartry Roll of Honour” 25th December 1914.

Girthon Church Memorial :   W McKay     Gordon Highlanders

Sons Of Galloway : Corporal William Mackay (1716) of the 1st & 2nd Gordon Highlanders. Invalided with frost bitten feet and home in Gatehouse on short leave in February 1915.     Wounded 17/06/1915, evacuated to hospital in Cambridge for treatment (July 1915).     Killed in Action 05/09/1916.

1901 Girthon Census, 37 Catherine Street : William McKay (13, born Dalbeattie) with grandparents John (stone breaker) and Mary McKay.

His army number apparently indicates that he probably enlisted in November 1908, and hence was a career soldier.

William Hutchison McKechnie

SRoH.     Private William Hutchison McKechnie.    Home: Kirkdale Schoolhouse, Creetown.     Enlisted February 1916, 3rd King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
Transferred to 1/5th King’s Own Scottish Borderers.     Served on the Eastern Front (Gaza and other engagements up to capture of Jerusalem).
Wounded once near Jaffa at the crossing of the River Auja.

1901 Kirkmabreck Census, Kirkdale Schoolhouse : William H. (16, born Kirkmabreck) with father William (schoolmaster), mother Anne and sister Flora.

Gatehouse link : Lived at Kirkdale, near Gatehouse.

Harry McKendrick

George Murray McKie

Enlisted Canadian Mounted Rifles.     Served on Western Front.
Killed in action 27th October 1917.

1901 Anwoth Census, Fleet Street : George Murray McKie (21, house joiner, born Balmaclellan) was a boarder with Elizabeth Buchannan, widow.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 16th November 1917: Sergeant George M. McKie C.M.R. (Canadians) was killed in France at the end of October. He was employed by Smith & Murray (joiners) in Gatehouse before he emigrated to Canada.
