Census records do not reflect house numbers. Enumerators may start at one end of the street, and on one side of the street, but 10 years later the route may change completely. Also there are some multi-occupancy properties where it is not always clear who shares a building with who. The census merely reflects the order in which the enumerator collected information from families in his chosen route around his enumeration district.

Many of the High Street feus each cover 2 properties, maybe originally with the intention of using one property for accommodation and the other as a business / shop. Later the property use may change and there might be 2 families, each occupying half of the original feu.
Valuation Rolls refer to property ownership and occupancy, but they often don't tell us where the property is.
Deeds are often incomplete and are not always clear about what part of a property is actually changing hands.
But by using Census, Valuation Rolls and Deeds together we can allocate many families to specific houses.
But sometimes we cannot be completely sure about which half of a 2-property feu is occupied by the owner and which is rented.
It is clearly not an exact science but we have done our best.
